Seaplanes services since 2012 has become an issue as it is facing a opposition from the fishermen community and urging the tourism department to stop as it would bring an adverse impact over the livelihood of hundreds of fishermen of Kerala. But even after so many complications and opposition, it seems the service will resume after the general elections of this year are over.

According to the officials of Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL), the operations of the seaplanes would begin by the end of April or in May.

The fishermen opposition against the service is yet to be consider as the expert committee constituted to study the impact is yet to submit it final report. The committee has made discussions a month ago, but opportunity of making a spot study of landing and takeoff is not received as the only seaplane which was brought for the inaugural service at Kollam has also been taken back to Bangalore.

The preparation of the flight service is in full swing and the three operators are willing to provide the services, the KTIL officials said.

Orders given for craft:

Order for making craft for operations in Kerala has been already given to the U.S. based company, a Kochi based operator told The Hindu. The sea planes are ready and for the operations it will be brought soon, he said.  A representative of one of the operator said, the company plans to lunch operations between Kochi and Lakshadweep.

Flight services are also being planned from Bekal in Northern Kerala to destinations in Karnataka. The plane will also be used for emergency services like evacuation during natural disaster and transporting patient during emergency medical treatment.

Sea plane operator is also set to launch operations in Mumbai, to connect place where there is lack of proper connectivity for places of tourist interest. The service is assumed to start by the end of March, according to sources in the industry.

Meanwhile the fishermen who protested about the adverse effect of seaplane service in backwater have withstood with their demand. The demands of the fishermen are backed by various trade unions and during the election period the unions will take softer stand.

The issue has become a major one as some of the political parties are taking it serious as the community is a potential vote bank. Some of the parties have gathered strength as large number of fishermen live along the coastal areas of backwaters and Kerala.

The net acted as the major platform for endorsements as the department had highly depended on Google.  Zacharia added, “Before the commencement of tourism season, we completed shooting new houseboat commercials and designed new print and visual ads for the circulation through the internet”.

He said, “A huge increase in interest among the foreign tourists for Kerala was witnessed due to the campaigns with the support of Google and connectivity solutions like Wi-Fi and mobile internet. Using the popularity of digital revolution, the state advertised itself with great efficiency on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.”

In 2012, the total income from both direct and indirect tourism in Kerala was estimated about Rs 21,125 crore compared to about Rs 19,037 crore the previous year. Also that, around 1.01 crore domestic tourists visited the state in 2012 compared to around 93.88 lakh domestic tourists in 2011. The official also stated that Foreign exchange earnings increased from about Rs 4,221.99 crore in 2011 to about Rs 4,548 crore in 2012.

District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Secretary C. Pradeep revealed that this year, large number of enquiries had been coming in from abroad. He said, “Through internet, every year from Europe we have been receiving around 200-300 enquiries. It is the evidence that our internet marketing has produced an impact.”
On the other hand, the All Kerala Houseboat Owners Association (AKHOA) general secretary N.Sreekumar blamed the government for its failure in enforcing appealing promotional packages for foreign tourists who were interested to visit Kerala. Even with the existence of many obstacles, foreign tourists still wanted to visit Kerala. He also added that the chief source of income for houseboats income was via internet.

An adoption of process of growing mangroves like that of Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra, Karnataka has witness a new flocks of tourist at its shores of beauty, growing a mangroves at the site of coastal delta area have proved to be fertile for the state.

Named as mangrove tourist, they come in numbers to pay a visit to a most popular spot of Karwar and ullal; they are seen enjoying a beauty and loves to walk around at the site of mangrove plantation and even looks for a boat ride to see a beauty of nautical and avian life.

Mangroves forest near coastal area of Kanwar and ullal, have enhance after they went up growing a mangrove under a project of green wall 2008. As per the report from a department of forest there are more than 800 hectares of land within estuarine has been covered by a lush of mangrove which in later can be developed as eco tourist spot.

Dr Keshavnath, who has carried delve into research in zooplankton and phytoplankton, suggest planting of mangroves in more areas.

Hasiru kavacha or green armour has been developed as a mangrove plantation area covering a zone of over 300 acres; local village committee had taken an approach to develop the plantation of mangrove. After an introduction of carbon storing we have enhance its plantation, said by said Manjunath Shetty, assistant conservator of forests, Kundapur range.

“If we were to dissolve the carbon contents in the air quickly, we need large stretch of mangrove forests all along the coast. Fortunately, they grow pretty fast,” said Jayakar Bhandary, a botanist who guides various green groups in the coastal areas of Karnataka.

VN Nayak, director, Sub Regional Science Centre at Karwar and member of the Karnataka state environmental report committee 2011, defines mangroves a ‘carbon sink’. As they grow in saline water they shed leaves and recover it quickly making it evergreen again and the leaf that falls on the ground transformed itself into fertile manure the shedding process would happen if the plant ingest carbon and throw out oxygen. And this procedure earned them a name of carbon sink as mentioned by Nayak; he further said a new center of mangrove would facilitate a research and studies related with a fantastic species of plant.

Tourism

Although a department of conservation are not in a favour to bring mangrove under a section of tourism but they also could not deny a fact of excluding it from a eco tourism is a crime, as people loves to circle around the field of mangrove for outsider it has became a wonderful attraction.

As said by Shetty, we do not know what acquires them near the field of mangrove as it call for a risk for a sensitive fish breeding process but their anxiety and their response has given us a idea to develop a finest mangrove eco tourism center.

Importance of mangroves

Fisheries: Mangrove forests are home to a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and mollusk species. These fisheries form a necessary spring of food for thousands of coastal communities around the world.

Timber and plant products:

as the wood is of prime importance as it resist an insects it is a backbone for many coastal and indigenous communities.

Coastal protection: as it helps to alleviate by trapping sediments as a result it averts erosion from waves and storms.

Tourism: Given the variety of life live in mangrove systems, and their immediacy in many cases to other tourist attractions such as coral reefs and sandy beaches, it is conceivably astounding that only a few countries have started to valve into the tourism latent of their mangrove forests.

What are mangroves?

Mangroves are a compilation of salt forbearing evergreen trees that grow in humid and sub-tropical coastal milieu and line just about 8% of the world’s coastlines.

As they grows both in land and water they are often termed as floating forest, an amazing roots of mangrove allows it to grow and float as their roots grows in fine muds.

They are unique because they occupy both land and water and are sometimes referred to as ‘floating forests’. This unique aspect of mangroves that enable them to ‘float’ is due to their aerial roots that develop in fine muds or sandy sediments.

Tourism industry of Kerala is really finding hard times to cop up with the upcoming events of election as all the channels have shifted their focus to broadcast the ballot battles between the national and regional party.

As the major economic grounds of the state depends on the state tourism and under such prospect the dearth of development activities, welfare schemes and rising pollution are really creating drama beside that such features are acting as an add-on for upcoming polls.

As per the authorities the federal government is really not doing any sufficient work to modulate the infrastructure since the tourist hay days are marching their way it is very important for the government to arrange the lines.

According to P K Sanjeev Kumar it is tourism workers who provides an opportunity for exchequer to earn foreign currency but the government in its response is not doing anything to aid them which in turn would lead to exclusion of due returns.

Strict government rules, tough competition in sectors are really asking the houseboat operators to think of something else and above that global recession have really asked the tourism agency to feel the heat of such situation.

Houseboats which can be consider as the sole attraction of the Kerala backwaters are lying idle and more of all it has become more than a liabilities for an owners to cop up with the same.
Autodrivers here are reserve for an upcoming poll and under such situation there is no one to communicate our problem. As per Visnu the communication is the main thing required here and we are in demand of quick and easy transportation.

The recession in order to understand must be trace by 70% dip of foreign tourist and what’s more amazing is advocate Nassar Tayyamadom, who is the state president of tourism workers is really unaware regarding the problems.

Under such circumstances the field workers like houseboat owners, managers of resort and entrepreneurs have received mass support from the UDF and it is very impressive to understand that they are showing immense governance potential.

Being a hub of Political power blocks Kerala has always been a centre of windfall during the time of election. Tour operators from Alappazuha and the states backwater tourism are really feeling the pressure of election prospects.

Perhaps the reason behind it being a centre of magnitude is many of the top leaders like A K Anthony, Vayalar Ravi and others bends their way from the shore of Kerala beside that other historical movements and dates has really affected the arena of political phenomenon.

Ever since the day the election made its way the state has become a centre of activity and while preaching and campaigning the course they did not even spared the estuary of Vembanad and other region.

Flags and festoons unfurled around motorbikes where campaigner from every party fits in their loudspeaker within the water bodies and Kuttanad Paddy field to preach the word of promises to ensure as many votes as they could.

An exclusive campaign within the site of lakes and water body’s acts more like a festival because the campaigner here starts the proceeding in the mooring and surrounds the site till the late night. Capitalising the view of traveller entrepreneurs and tour operators are trying to endorse the occasion through marketing and understanding the point of the explorer from across the world who a

Gorge Thomas one of the leading tour operators who have already managed the packages for their tourist while speaking on political call said the traveller really wish to see how things picks up during the call of election but he also said that the campaigner would envy the walks of the traveller regarding the process.

Tomy Pulikkattil, said during the peak of election around 150 travellers would make their safe landing within the shore of the state. While speaking in context of other tour operators he said they add more packages which includes the meeting with the candidate and arrangement of tour within the major contesting constituencies.
